Find the fraction
1/20 or 1/10 before the karat mark is the whole disclosure, and it is usually the smallest and most worn part of the stamp. Under a loupe, look along the full length of the mark rather than at the karat number alone.

The 14K GF (Gold Filled) Mark
The commonest gold-filled standard. Durable, honestly marked, and not solid gold.
The American standard, and widespread in Germany and eastern Europe4 references
14 karat gold filled dominated affordable American jewellery from the late nineteenth century until plating became cheap enough to displace it, and a great deal of surviving antique and vintage jewellery is gold filled rather than solid. It is a genuinely good product: a sheet of 14 karat gold pressure-bonded to a brass core and then drawn or rolled as a single metal.
The fraction in the mark is the disclosure. 1/20 14K GF means one twentieth of the total weight is 14 karat gold — the US minimum for the description. 1/10 14K GF means one tenth, which is twice as thick and correspondingly more durable. Rolled gold plate, RGP, falls below the gold-filled threshold.
For an owner the important consequences are practical. Gold filled cannot be sized, soldered or heavily polished without breaching the layer, so a jeweller will usually decline the work. It has no meaningful melt value. But it can be worn daily for decades without wearing through, which ordinary plating cannot.

Look for wear-through as a small window
Because the layer is thick, gold filled tends to breach in a small discrete patch at the highest-wear point rather than fading broadly. A brass-coloured window at the edge of a bezel or the crest of a shank is the signature.
