Hermès is the only maison whose bags routinely resell above retail: in 2026 a pristine Birkin 25 resells for about twice its roughly $13,500 US list price. Chanel classics hold about 70–85% of current retail, Louis Vuitton's monogram classics about 50–70%, and most other designer bags 10–45%. Classic shapes in durable materials hold best at every house.

Handbag resale is unusually legible: a small number of bags from a small number of maisons hold their value, and almost everything else comes back at a fraction of its price. The three maisons below are where most of the value questions are asked, and they sit at three very different points.
Each is priced against its own current retail, which matters more for handbags than for anything else. Hermès, Chanel and Louis Vuitton all raise prices regularly, so a bag that resells well below today's boutique price can still return more than its owner paid.

- Are designer bags a good investment?
- A very small number are stores of value — a Birkin above all. Most designer bags lose more than half their price, and even the classics sell at a discount to current retail and after fees. Buy a bag to carry; treat resale as a bonus.
- Where can I sell a designer bag for the most money?
- Privately or peer-to-peer, where commissions are lowest — at the cost of handling authentication and returns yourself. Consignment nets less and is easier; a buy-outright desk nets least and pays today.
- How do I find out exactly what my bag is worth?
- Identify the exact model, size, material and color, look up the current boutique price for it, then compare sold — not listed — prices for the same bag in similar condition. The maison pages give dated ranges; sold listings settle it.
