KAWS releases work as vinyl figures, prints and paintings, and the figures carry most of the counterfeit volume because they are produced in editions, sold out instantly, and resold at multiples of retail. There is no central authentication body, so the reads are physical and documentary.
Vinyl figures are read on their moulding, their paint application, their base stamping and their packaging. Genuine production has crisp mould lines, even paint with no overspray, and stamped copyright and edition information on the underside.
For prints, the publisher's documentation and the edition marking carry the case, as with any contemporary print market.
Vinyl figures carry stamped information on the underside of the base — the artist's mark, copyright and year, and on many releases a production or edition indication. The stamp is moulded into the vinyl rather than printed on it.
Packaging is part of the object in this market. Genuine boxes have correct print quality, correct colour and correct construction, and the figure is seated in packaging made for it. Because resale value depends on the box, counterfeits invest in it — which means the box is necessary evidence and not sufficient evidence.
Prints carry publisher documentation and handwritten edition marking. There is no central authenticator, so publisher provenance and purchase records are the documentary case.
Ordered by how much each one settles. The decisive checks are the ones worth your first five minutes; the supporting ones only matter once those are clean.
Genuine vinyl production has crisp, consistent mould lines and seams that meet cleanly. Counterfeits show soft or doubled seams, flash left at the joins, and vinyl that feels lighter or more brittle. Run a finger along every seam.
Paint is applied evenly with clean boundaries and no overspray, and the colours match the release. Counterfeits show overspray at boundaries, uneven coverage on curved surfaces, and colours that are close rather than correct.
The underside carries the artist's mark, copyright and year, moulded into the vinyl rather than printed onto it. A printed or stickered base is decisive against.

With no central authenticator, the original purchase record from an authorised release matters. Releases are documented and dated, so a figure claimed from a release that did not include that colourway is a straightforward problem.
KAWS counterfeits have improved substantially and now include convincing packaging, which used to be the fastest read. Moulding and paint remain the reliable checks because they are manufacturing quality rather than graphic design.
The other frequent problem is colourways that were never released. Releases are documented, so a figure in a combination that no release included is not a variant — it is a fabrication.
