Heavy gold electroplate was widely used in the 1970s and 1980s on watch cases, bracelets and chains, and it is one of the marks that most often disappoints an owner who has read only the karat figure. The plating is genuinely thicker than standard electroplate — enough to survive years of wear — but it is still an electrodeposited layer measured in microns over base metal.
It is worth recognising because a great deal of it survives, looks convincing, and is stamped with a prominent 18K followed by a much smaller HGE. On watch cases the mark is usually on the case back, where it also wears against clothing.
There is no recoverable gold. The layer is far too thin to refine economically, so an HGE piece's value is entirely in what it is — a period design, a working watch — rather than in its metal.

Establish which of these you are holding before judging it. A genuine piece read against another reference's rules will look wrong when it is not.
These apply to this model and not to the rest of GP / HGE / GEP. Work them alongside the maker's general checks, not instead of them.
On watches the mark is usually struck on the case back, and the HGE follows the karat figure in noticeably smaller characters. It is also the surface that rubs against a cuff, so the letters are often the most worn part of the mark.
Plating on watch cases fails first at the lug edges and on the inner faces of bracelet links, where movement is constant. Yellow-pink metal there confirms a base-metal case.
No metal value. Vintage examples occasionally have collector interest for their design.
