Authenticate Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

The chronograph with the longest waiting list, and therefore the strongest counterfeit incentive.

Introduced 1963Geneva

The Daytona is a chronograph, and its subdials are where counterfeits fail first. On a genuine watch the three subdials are precisely positioned and their hands return to exactly zero when reset — every time, with no drift. A reset hand that stops a fraction off zero is a movement that is not what it claims to be.

The pushers screw down on modern references and unscrew with a definite thread before the chronograph will engage. The action of starting, stopping and resetting is crisp and requires deliberate pressure; a mushy pusher is a failure.

The tachymetre scale on the bezel is engraved and filled on steel references, and the numbers are evenly spaced around the ring with sharp edges. Ceramic bezels carry the scale in moulded precious metal, which reads very differently and is correct for those references.

Because the Daytona's waiting lists are long and its prices high, this is the reference where genuine watches with replaced parts are most common. Check that the dial, hands, bezel and bracelet all belong to the same generation.

The market

What a Cosmograph Daytona does on the secondary market

The strongest secondary market Rolex has, trading well above retail across most steel references. Provenance and completeness matter here more than on any other model, and vintage Paul Newman dials are a market of their own.

An orientation for honest, unrestored condition — never an appraisal, and never a quotation.

Questions we are asked

How do I check a Daytona chronograph?
Reset it repeatedly. On a genuine watch all three subdial hands return to exactly zero every time with no drift; a hand that stops a fraction off zero is a movement that is not what it claims to be.
Do Daytona pushers screw down?
On modern references, yes. They unscrew with a definite thread before the chronograph will engage, and starting, stopping and resetting should feel crisp rather than mushy.

The checks tell you how it was made. The instrument tells you what it appears to be, and roughly what its kind fetches.
