Authenticate Omega Speedmaster Professional

The Moonwatch — a manual-wind chronograph whose vintage market is full of replaced parts.

Introduced 1957Biel

The Speedmaster Professional is manual-wind, which is the first thing to establish: it does not self-wind, and a Speedmaster Professional with a rotor visible through the back is a different reference or not a Speedmaster at all.

The tachymetre bezel carries a specific scale with a dot over the 90 on certain vintage references — a detail collectors price heavily and counterfeiters and redialers get wrong. The bezel insert should sit flush and its printing should be sharp.

On vintage pieces, lume ageing is the read. Tritium lume on the dial and on the hands was applied at the same time and should have aged to the same tone. A dial with creamy patina and hands with bright white lume means the hands were replaced, which is honest servicing but changes what the watch is.

The chronograph's three subdials should be precisely positioned, their hands should reset to exactly zero, and the pushers should have a crisp action. An Extract from the Archives confirms the production date and original configuration for anything vintage.

The market

What a Speedmaster Professional does on the secondary market

Strong and knowledgeable. Original dials, original hands, original bezel and a matching extract carry a substantial premium over an otherwise identical watch with service parts — often a multiple rather than a margin.

An orientation for honest, unrestored condition — never an appraisal, and never a quotation.

Questions we are asked

Is the Speedmaster Professional automatic?
No. The Moonwatch is manual-wind and has been since 1957. A visible automatic rotor means a different reference.
How can I tell if a vintage Speedmaster has been redialled?
Compare the lume on the dial with the lume on the hands. They were applied at the same time and should have aged to the same tone; bright hands against a patinated dial means replaced parts.
