Diamond Colour Grades, Explained

Colour is graded on a stone lying face-down in a laboratory, and worn face-up on a hand. Those are two different questions, and only one of them is on the report.

What the scale actually measures

A colour grade records how little colour a diamond has, not what colour it is. The scale runs from D, meaning no detectable body colour, down to Z, meaning a light yellow or brown that is obvious to an unaided eye. It begins at D rather than A because the system was written to replace a market already using A, AA and AAA to mean whatever the seller wished.

Crucially, the grade is arrived at under conditions that have nothing to do with wearing a ring. The stone is unset, cleaned, and placed table-down in a tray so the grader looks through the pavilion, where body colour concentrates. It is then compared against a set of master stones of known grade in standardised lighting. Every grade on every report you will ever read was decided this way.

The five bands, and what each looks like

Individual letters matter far less than the band a stone sits in. Adjacent grades — an F beside a G, a G beside an H — are difficult to separate even for a trained grader without the master stones in front of them, which is exactly why the master stones exist.

Set into a ring, the bands behave predictably. Colourless and near-colourless stones read as white. Faint stones show warmth against a white metal, and pleasant warmth against a yellow one. Below that, colour is a characteristic of the stone rather than a flaw to be hidden, and the price falls accordingly.

  • D–F, colourless: no colour visible under any normal condition. A rarity premium as much as a visual one.
  • G–J, near-colourless: warmth detectable face-down by a grader, effectively invisible face-up once set.
  • K–M, faint: a warm tint a careful eye will notice in a white setting, flattered by yellow gold.
  • N–R, very light: colour plainly visible, priced substantially lower.
  • S–Z, light: unmistakable yellow or brown, a different market entirely.

Why the grade you paid for is not the grade you see

Three things decide how much of a colour grade survives into daily life. Size is the first: body colour accumulates through the depth of a stone, so the same grade that is invisible at half a carat can be faintly warm at three. A two-carat H is a more visible H than a half-carat H.

Shape is the second. A round brilliant returns so much white light that it disguises body colour better than any other cut. Step cuts — emerald, Asscher, baguette — have large open facets that act like windows and show tint honestly, which is why the trade generally buys them a grade or two higher than it would buy a brilliant.

Metal changes the answer

A setting is not neutral. Platinum and white gold sit next to the stone as a white reference and expose any warmth by contrast; yellow and rose gold reflect their own colour into the pavilion, so the eye stops reading the stone as tinted and starts reading it as matched.

The practical consequence is a genuine saving. If the ring is yellow gold, buying a J or a K rather than an F is close to invisible and frees a substantial part of the budget for weight, cut or nothing at all. If the ring is platinum and the stone is a step cut, that trade goes the other way.

In yellow gold, a J can read whiter than an F does in platinum. The setting is part of the colour grade, and no report mentions it.

Fluorescence, milkiness and the exceptions

A minority of diamonds glow blue under ultraviolet light. In a faintly yellow stone that blue can offset the warmth in daylight, which is why some I and J stones with medium blue fluorescence look a shade whiter than their grade — and why they often cost less than a non-fluorescent equivalent. Occasionally, and only at strong intensities, fluorescence is accompanied by a hazy or oily appearance, which is a real defect and worth avoiding.

Separately, ignore the word AAA and any grading claim not attached to a laboratory report. Fancy colours — genuine pinks, blues, vivid yellows — are graded on an entirely different scale that runs from Faint up to Fancy Deep, and there the colour is the asset rather than the discount.

How to judge colour yourself

Ask for the stone loose if you can, lay a folded sheet of plain white paper on a table away from direct sunlight, and place the diamond table-down in the crease. You are now doing, crudely, what a laboratory does. Compare it against another stone if one is available; the eye is far better at ranking two stones than at grading one.

Two cautions. Showroom lighting is designed to flatter, and photographs are close to useless for colour because every camera and every screen adjusts white balance. If a colour grade matters to you, it needs to come from a report rather than from a picture — including from ours.

What colour does to price, and to resale

Per-carat prices step down as the letters progress, and the steps are largest at the top: the gap between D and F is a rarity premium paid by a small number of buyers, while the gap between G and J buys you very little visible difference. For most people, most of the time, the money is better spent on cut, which is the only grade that changes how a stone behaves in a room.

On resale the calculation shifts slightly. Certified colour in the colourless band is the easiest thing to sell because it needs no explanation, and an uncertified claim of colour is worth nothing at all. If you are buying with an eye on the far end, buy a graded stone in the near-colourless band and buy cut generously.

Is a G colour diamond good?

Yes. G sits at the top of the near-colourless band, which means a grader can detect a trace of warmth face-down while an unaided eye sees a white stone once it is set. For most buyers it is the point where paying more stops changing what you see.

Can you see the difference between D and G?

Not once the stone is set, in normal light, without the two side by side. Face-down against master stones the difference is real and gradeable, which is what the price difference reflects.

Does colour or clarity matter more?

Neither, usually — cut matters more than both. Between colour and clarity, an eye-clean stone in the near-colourless band almost always looks better than a flawless stone with visible tint, because clarity is judged at ten times magnification and colour is judged at arm's length.

What diamond colour is best for yellow gold?

Yellow gold reflects warmth into the stone, so grades in the faint band — J, K, occasionally L — read as matched rather than tinted and cost considerably less than colourless stones. In platinum or white gold the same stones look warm by contrast.

Do lab-grown diamonds have colour grades?

They are graded on the same D-to-Z scale, and near-colourless and colourless grades are common because growth conditions can be controlled. The grade means the same thing; the price for it does not.
