Authenticate Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra

The four-leaf clover motif, and the most counterfeited fine jewellery design in the world.

Introduced 1968Paris4 references

The Alhambra is a four-leaf clover edged in gold beads, produced in several sizes that the maison names distinctly — Vintage, Sweet, Magic — and in a range of stone materials. Establishing which line a piece belongs to comes first, because motif size and bead count differ between them.

The beading is the read. Genuine beads are uniform in diameter, evenly spaced, and consistent in count around each motif and between motifs on the same necklace or bracelet. Counterfeits cast the beading rather than working it, which produces variation that a loupe finds immediately.

The stone inserts are natural materials — mother of pearl with genuine iridescent depth, onyx with a true black, malachite with banding that differs motif to motif. Perfect uniformity across motifs indicates a synthetic substitute, because natural materials vary.

Hallmarks and the serial sit on the clasp or on a motif's reverse depending on the piece, struck or engraved crisply. Van Cleef boutiques will inspect a piece submitted for service.

Establish which of these you are holding before judging it. A genuine piece read against another reference's rules will look wrong when it is not.

The market

What a Alhambra does on the secondary market

Holds value unusually well for jewellery, sustained by consistent demand and by the maison's pricing. Complete sets, original boxes and papers add; heavily worn stone inserts, which cannot be restored, subtract sharply.

An orientation for honest, unrestored condition — never an appraisal, and never a quotation.

Questions we are asked

How can I tell if a Van Cleef Alhambra is real?
Count the beads around each motif under a loupe. Genuine beading is uniform in size, evenly spaced and consistent in count between motifs; counterfeits cast the beading and it varies. Then check the hallmarks are struck rather than laser-printed.
Should mother of pearl look identical on every motif?
No — it is a natural material and genuine motifs vary in their iridescence and figure. Perfect uniformity across every motif indicates a synthetic substitute.
