Authenticate Louis Vuitton Speedy

The city bag the maison scaled down for Audrey Hepburn, and the most copied shape it makes.

Introduced 1930Paris4 references

The Speedy is a single piece of canvas wrapped under the bag, which is the fact that decides most Speedy cases. Because one length of canvas runs from the front, under the base, and up the back, the monogram is necessarily upside down on one of the two faces. A Speedy with both faces the right way up has been made from two cut panels, and Louis Vuitton does not make it that way.

The handles are the second read. They are rolled vachetta, firm rather than floppy, and they darken years before the piping does. On a genuinely old Speedy the handles will be several shades ahead of the trim on the base — an even tone across both is the signature of a bag that was dyed rather than carried.

Sizes are numbered in centimetres across the base: 25, 30 and 35 are the classics, with the 40 and 45 as travel pieces. The Bandoulière variant adds D-rings and a strap and is a distinct reference, not an aftermarket addition, so a strap fitted to rings that were riveted on afterwards is a modification at best.

The lock is brass, numbered, and swings on its own tab; it is decorative and not a security feature. Locks are interchangeable between bags, so a mismatched lock number is not evidence of a fake — but a lock that is light, bright yellow, or stamped shallowly is.

Establish which of these you are holding before judging it. A genuine piece read against another reference's rules will look wrong when it is not.

Model-specific checks

What decides a Speedy

These apply to this model and not to the rest of Louis Vuitton. Work them alongside the maker's general checks, not instead of them.

01Strong

Handle tab stitch count

Five even stitches across each handle tab on conventional production, matching left to right, in waxed mustard thread. A differing count between the two tabs on the same bag is the failure to look for rather than the absolute number, which has varied by era.

02Supporting

The zip pull and its track

The zipper runs the full length without catching and the pull hangs straight. Older pieces carry an LV-stamped pull; the stamp is deep and centred. A pull that sits at an angle, or a zip that needs coaxing at the corners, points to a cheaper tape and a rushed insertion.

The market

What a Speedy does on the secondary market

Monogram Speedy 30s in honest condition are the liquid end of the resale market and trade in a wide band depending on patina and whether the piece has been re-lined. Damier Ebene runs slightly ahead for the same condition, and anything with cracked vachetta corners drops sharply, since corner replacement is the single most expensive common repair.

An orientation for honest, unrestored condition — never an appraisal, and never a quotation.

Questions we are asked

Why is the monogram upside down on one side of my Speedy?
Because the bag is cut from one continuous piece of canvas that runs under the base. That is how Louis Vuitton makes it, and both faces reading the right way up is a sign of a counterfeit rather than of a better bag.
Does a Speedy have a date code?
Bags made between roughly 1990 and February 2021 do, stamped on an interior tab. Older pieces may have none, and production from March 2021 uses a microchip instead of a printed code.
