The Marmont's chevron quilting has to meet cleanly at the centre seam and at the flap, forming an unbroken V. Counterfeits commonly get the chevron angle slightly wrong or fail to align it across the flap, which shows immediately when the bag is viewed straight on.
The double-G hardware is an antiqued gold finish, not bright plating, and the two Gs are cast as one piece with a defined gap between them. On genuine hardware the antiquing sits in the recesses and wears off the high points with use; on counterfeits it is often painted evenly across the whole surface, so it wears in patches instead.
The back of a genuine Marmont carries a heart-shaped quilted panel. It should be symmetrical and centred, and the quilting stitch should be the same density as the front. This is a detail counterfeits frequently omit or place off-centre.
The chain is part leather, part metal on shoulder versions, with the leather threaded through cleanly. Inside, the serial tag carries its two rows of digits and the lining is a cotton-blend microfibre rather than a slippery synthetic.

High volume, so resale is moderate rather than strong. Condition of the leather at the flap edge and the state of the antiqued hardware set the price; the mini and camera sizes hold better than the medium.
