Dior's marks are the Cannage quilting, the D-I-O-R charms that hang from the handle, and an interior date code that follows a format of its own. The charms are where most counterfeits are caught, because they are small, individually cast, and have to hang correctly.
Cannage is the woven-cane quilting pattern the maison took from the chairs at its first shows. On a genuine Lady Dior the quilt is deep, evenly spaced and aligned so the pattern meets across the seams and around the corners of a structured bag — which is difficult, and expensive, and where counterfeiters economise.
The date code system is not a serial. It encodes a location and a period, and it has changed format across eras, so it is best used to test whether a bag's claimed age agrees with the rest of it.
Dior stamps a code into the leather inside the bag, and its format has changed over the years. Older production commonly uses two letters followed by four digits; more recent production has run other combinations, and the maison has moved to embedded chips on current pieces.
The code is impressed into leather, level and even, and on many models it is deliberately placed out of easy sight — inside a pocket, behind a seam. A printed code, a code on a sewn-in fabric label where the model uses leather, or a code stamped at a visible angle are the ordinary failures.
There is no public register to check a Dior code against. What it lets you do is test consistency: a code whose format belongs to one era on a bag whose hardware and lining belong to another has told you something worth following up.
Ordered by how much each one settles. The decisive checks are the ones worth your first five minutes; the supporting ones only matter once those are clean.
Four letter charms hang from the handle, each individually cast, each hanging straight and free, with the letters correctly proportioned and the plating even. Genuine charms have weight and their rings turn cleanly. Charms that are light, that hang crooked, that show casting seams, or whose letterforms are subtly wrong in width are the single commonest catch on a fake Lady Dior.
The quilt is deep, evenly spaced, and continues across seams and around corners without breaking. On a structured bag this is genuinely hard to achieve and is where counterfeits give themselves away — look at the corners and at the join between the front panel and the side gusset.

Dior hardware is substantial with an even plating that dulls with wear. The rings the charms hang from turn freely without play, and the handle attachment hardware sits flush against the leather. Rough edges inside a ring, or a ring that has begun to open under the weight of the charms, are failures.
Cannage stitching is even in length and tension, and the thread colour matches the leather closely. Counterfeits run longer stitches and lower tension, which flattens the quilt and rounds what should be a defined diamond.
Interiors are leather or branded textile depending on the line, stitched cleanly with finished pocket edges. A slippery synthetic lining or raw pocket edges are shortcuts taken out of sight.
Counterfeit Dior concentrates on the Lady Dior and the Saddle, and both are caught most often on their metalwork — the charms in the first case, the hardware in the second. Casting small metal parts well is expensive and slow, and it is the last thing a counterfeit operation invests in.
The second reliable read is the Cannage itself. Aligning a deep quilt around the corners of a structured bag wastes material and time, and a counterfeit's quilting will typically break at a corner or shift scale between panels.
