A Chanel flap is a set of interlocking facts. The quilt has to align across every seam, the lock has to be built the way the maison builds it, the chain has to weigh what it should, and the serial has to place the bag in a year whose hardware and interior it actually matches. Counterfeits usually get two or three of those right and fail on the fourth.
The serial system is the part people search for and the part that changed most recently: the adhesive serial sticker inside the bag was retired in 2021 in favour of an embedded chip. A brand-new Chanel with a paper serial sticker is wrong, and an older Chanel whose sticker looks freshly applied over an unstained patch of lining deserves a second look.
Read the quilt first. It costs nothing and it is the check counterfeiters find hardest to pass at volume.
From 1984 Chanel placed an adhesive serial sticker inside the bag, protected by a clear film, with a matching card in the box. The leading digits are a series number, and each series corresponds to a production window — that is what lets you test a bag's claimed age against its hardware and lining.
Seven-digit serials belong to the early series and eight-digit serials to series three onward. The relationship between series and year is well documented and roughly linear, so a bag whose serial places it in 1994 but whose interior is a modern microfibre in a colour Chanel did not use then has told you something.
In 2021 the sticker was replaced by an NFC chip sewn into the lining, and the authenticity card went with it. Recent production therefore has no visible serial at all, which is correct.
Two mechanical checks on the sticker itself: the film should be intact and bonded, with the digits sharp and evenly spaced under it, and the sticker should sit on lining that has aged with the rest of the bag. Counterfeiters reuse genuine serials, so a number that checks out is not proof — but the physical sticker is hard to reproduce well.

Series windows overlap because production and release do not align exactly. Use the serial to test a claimed year, never to confirm authenticity on its own.
Ordered by how much each one settles. The decisive checks are the ones worth your first five minutes; the supporting ones only matter once those are clean.
On a Classic Flap the diamonds must meet where panels join — front to flap, flap to side, side to back — with the lines continuing as though the bag were cut from one skin. Chanel wastes leather to achieve this and counterfeiters do not. Look particularly at the join between the flap and the body, and at the back panel where a misalignment is least likely to be photographed.
On the interlocking CC turn-lock the right C passes over the left at the top of the crossing, and the left passes over the right at the bottom. That relationship is consistent across genuine production and is one of the few absolute rules on a Chanel bag. The lock should also turn with resistance and sit flush when closed, not rattle.
The chain is heavy — noticeably so for its size — and on classic models it carries a leather strip woven through the links. The leather is one continuous piece, cut clean, and it sits in the links without bunching. A light chain, a chain that kinks rather than falls, or a leather strip that has been pieced together are all failures.
The CHANEL heat stamp inside is crisp, level and correctly spaced, with the ® mark where it belongs and the country of manufacture beneath. Chanel bags are made in France and in Italy; both are correct. The stamp should be struck to an even depth rather than printed, and the metallic foiling on it wears rather than flakes.
Genuine quilting runs a high, consistent stitch count per diamond side, and the thread tension is even enough that the quilting sits proud without puckering. Counterfeits run fewer, longer stitches to save time, which reads as a flatter, softer quilt with slightly rounded diamonds instead of crisp ones.
Chanel hardware is plated to a depth that dulls rather than flakes, and the screws holding the lock plate are finished flush and unmarked. Tool marks around a screw head, plating already lifting at an edge, or hardware in a colour that does not match across lock, chain and feet all point the same way.
The Chanel counterfeit market is unusual in that it is stratified: cheap fakes fail on quilt alignment from across a room, while the top tier now reproduces the lock, the chain weight and even a plausible serial sticker. What the top tier still struggles with is leather. Chanel's lambskin has a particular soft, fine grain that bruises easily, and caviar has a pebbled grain with a specific bounce under a thumbnail.
The other durable weakness is internal consistency. A counterfeit is assembled from parts copied out of different reference bags, so its serial, its interior lining, its hardware finish and its stamp often belong to four different years.
