Bottega Veneta built its identity on the absence of a logo — 'when your own initials are enough' — which means there is very little branding to check and the weave has to carry the whole case. That is a gift to an inspector, because Intrecciato is genuinely difficult to make well and almost impossible to fake at volume.
Intrecciato is leather cut into strips and woven by hand over a base. On genuine work the strips are of exactly consistent width, the weave tension is even, and the pattern turns the corners and meets the seams without a visible join or a doubled strip. Counterfeits use wider strips to cover the surface faster, weave them loosely, and hide the joins where they think you will not look.
Under Daniel Lee from 2018 the house introduced deliberately oversized weaves and a distinct hardware vocabulary, which is a separate era with separate expectations — the Cassette and the Jodie belong to it and should not be judged by the classic Intrecciato rules.
Inside the bag is a small leather tag or an impressed stamp carrying the house name and, on most production, a code. The code identifies a style and a run rather than an individual bag, and there is no public register.
The stamp is small, struck level, and even in depth. On many pieces the branding is deliberately minimal — an impressed mark with no foil at all — which is correct for the house and regularly mistaken for a missing feature by people expecting Gucci-style branding.
Authenticity cards accompany modern production. As everywhere, they travel independently of bags and are worth nothing as proof.
Ordered by how much each one settles. The decisive checks are the ones worth your first five minutes; the supporting ones only matter once those are clean.
Every leather strip in an Intrecciato weave is the same width, and the tension across the weave is even enough that the surface is flat with no loose or bulging strips. Counterfeits use wider strips — it takes fewer of them to cover the same area — and weave them loosely. Measure a few strips against each other; genuine work is exact.
At the corners and along the seams, genuine Intrecciato continues without a visible join, a doubled strip, or a change of angle. Making the weave turn cleanly is the expensive part of the technique and it is precisely what a counterfeit skips. Look at the base corners first.
The leather is soft, matte and supple, and a woven panel should flex and settle rather than hold a crease. Stiff, shiny leather that creases and stays creased is the ordinary counterfeit material, and it shows within seconds of handling the bag.
Classic Bottega hardware is minimal, matte or brushed rather than bright, and substantial. Logo-heavy hardware on a bag presented as classic Intrecciato is wrong for the house. Daniel Lee-era pieces use bolder hardware, which is correct for that era and not for the earlier one.
Linings are suede or fine textile, stitched cleanly with finished edges. The interior stamp is small, level, impressed rather than printed, and often unfoiled. A large, foiled, heavily branded interior stamp is not how this house marks its work.
Bottega is the maison where counterfeiting is least economic, because the value is in slow handwork rather than in a mark that can be copied. Fakes exist in volume for the newer, bolder shapes — the Cassette, the Jodie, the Pouch — where the weave is oversized and therefore quicker to imitate.
Even there, strip width gives it away. Consistent width across hundreds of strips is a manufacturing discipline, not a design choice, and it is the thing to measure.
