TAG Heuer sits at the price point where counterfeiting is most economic in absolute volume: expensive enough to be worth faking, cheap enough that buyers do not always have a watchmaker look. The fakes are usually poor, and the checks are correspondingly quick.
The maison's identity split matters for dating. Watches signed Heuer alone are pre-1985; the TAG Heuer signature belongs to production after the TAG Group acquisition. A watch signed TAG Heuer and presented as a 1970s Carrera is wrong on its face.
Movements are a mixture of Swiss quartz, modified ETA and Sellita bases, and in-house calibres on the higher references. Quartz TAG Heuers tick by design and that is not a fault.
The maker's own mark
Serials, references and the Heuer/TAG Heuer split
TAG Heuer engraves a reference and a serial on the caseback. Engraving is deep and even on genuine production; shallow, laser-printed or uneven numbers are the ordinary failure.
The brand signature dates the watch. Heuer alone means pre-1985, TAG Heuer means after — a hard fact that catches a great many misdescribed vintage listings. The maison has since reissued Heuer-signed models as deliberate heritage pieces, which are modern watches carrying a historical signature and are labelled as such.
No public serial lookup exists, but TAG Heuer's service network will inspect a watch and decline work on anything not genuine.

02Decisive
Signature against era
Heuer alone is pre-1985 production; TAG Heuer belongs to after. A watch whose signature disagrees with its claimed decade is either a modern heritage reissue — which is legitimate and labelled — or misdescribed.
03Strong
Chronograph subdial alignment and reset
Subdials are precisely positioned and their hands reset to exactly zero. Drift on reset, or subdial hands that do not sit centred in their tracks at rest, are movement failures.

Dial printing and applied markers
Sharp printing at magnification, applied markers mounted level and adhesive-free, and the shield logo correctly proportioned. Counterfeit dials show ink pooling at letter corners and markers that sit at slight angles.

Crystal and case finishing
Sapphire on most modern references, seated flush, with anti-reflective coating where specified. Case surfaces meet along defined boundaries. Mineral glass reflections and softened finish boundaries are failures.

What a counterfeit pays for, and what it skips
Counterfeit TAG Heuer is high in volume and low in quality, which makes it one of the easier maisons to read. Engraving depth on the caseback catches most of it within seconds.
The second category is genuine watches with service parts — replaced dials, hands and bezels fitted during honest repair — which is a value question rather than an authenticity one.
The failures worth looking for first
- Shallow or laser-printed caseback engraving.
- A TAG Heuer signature on a watch presented as 1970s Heuer.
- Chronograph hands that do not reset to zero.
- Applied markers sitting at slight angles.
