The Submariner's bezel is the model's defining part and its first read. It rotates in one direction only — anticlockwise — as a safety feature, so a diver's bezel that turns both ways is decisive against. The action is a precise, evenly spaced click with no play at any point in the rotation, and the insert's markings align exactly with the dial's markers at 12.
The lume is applied to a standard: Rolex's Chromalight glows blue and does so evenly across every marker and both hands, and it charges quickly. Counterfeit lume is patchy, fades within minutes, and often glows green rather than blue on a reference specified as Chromalight.
Case proportions matter. The Submariner's lugs are thick, the crown guards are shaped in a specific way that changed between generations, and the case sides on modern references are brushed with polished chamfers whose boundaries are dead straight. A soft, rounded transition between brushed and polished surfaces is a finishing failure.
The reference identifies the generation, and generations differ in case width, lug shape, bezel material and clasp. A watch whose parts belong to two different generations is either a service replacement or an assembly, and either way the seller should be able to say which.

Modern Submariners glow blue, evenly, from every marker and both hands, and hold it for hours. Patchy application, a green glow on a Chromalight reference, or lume that dies within minutes are all failures.
