IWC's Pilot's watches carry a soft-iron inner cage that shields the movement from magnetic fields, and that cage is a real component with real mass. It is why a Big Pilot weighs what it does, and it is why a counterfeit of one feels wrong in the hand immediately.
The maison also runs an archive service: for a fee it will confirm a watch's production date and original configuration from its records, which for a vintage IWC is the strongest documentary evidence available.
The physical reads are case construction, dial printing — IWC's dials are typographically restrained and exactly proportioned — and, on references with display backs, movement finishing.
IWC engraves a reference and serial on the caseback. The movement carries its own number on many references. Engraving is deep and even.

IWC's dial text is restrained, exactly proportioned and sharply printed, with the maison's name and Schaffhausen at specific weights. Counterfeits get the letterforms close and the spacing wrong, and it shows at magnification.
Cases are machined with defined finish boundaries, and the crown — on Big Pilot references a large conical one — winds and sets with even resistance and a definite click at each position. A mushy crown is a movement failure.
Côtes de Genève, perlage and a decorated rotor with the maison's engraving on references with display backs. Machine-finished edges or printed text are decisive against.
IWC's straps and bracelets are substantial, and the quick-change system on modern references engages positively. Thin straps with stamped buckles are inconsistent with the maison's production.
Counterfeit IWC concentrates on the Big Pilot and the Portugieser, and both are usually beaten on weight and on dial typography. The soft-iron cage is a genuine engineering component that costs money and adds nothing visible, so counterfeits omit it.
For older watches, the archive extract is the practical route to confidence.
