Handbag sizes, decoded — what the measurements mean and what fits
Every listing gives three numbers and no sense of scale. Twenty-five by eighteen by ten centimetres is either exactly the bag you wanted or a third smaller than the photograph suggested, and there is no way to tell from the figures alone until you have converted them, worked out the usable volume and compared it against something you own.
This instrument does that: both unit systems, an honest volume in litres, the size class the trade would call it, a plain list of what actually fits, and how the bag will read against your own frame.
Why the volume is less than the box
A handbag is not a box. Sides taper, bases are narrower than openings, linings and pockets take room, and a soft bag will not hold its nominal shape when full. In practice you lose around a fifth of the volume the three measurements describe, which is why a bag that should swallow a water bottle often will not.
Depth is the measurement to read most carefully. A flat bag with generous width and height carries far less than its face suggests, and a small increase in depth transforms what will go in.
Proportion: how a bag reads against you
The stylists' rule is that a bag reads well at roughly an eighth to a sixth of the wearer's height. Wider than a fifth and it carries the outfit rather than finishing it; much narrower than a twelfth and it is jewellery, which is precisely what a micro bag is bought to be.
Strap drop matters as much as size. A large bag on a short handle rides high and awkwardly; the same bag on a longer strap sits at the hip and reads as intended.
What each size class is actually for
Micro carries a card holder and a key, and no phone, whatever the photographs suggest. Mini takes a phone and a card holder — the evening size. Small is the everyday shoulder bag: phone, small wallet, keys, sunglasses. Medium is the most useful size there is, and the one most classics were designed at. Large is a working tote with room for a tablet and papers, and travel is weekend luggage.
If you are buying online, lay the measurements out on a table with a tape measure and put your actual phone, wallet and keys inside the outline. It is a cruder test than a calculator and it has never once been wrong.

- What is a good size handbag for everyday use?
- Something in the small to medium range — roughly 2 to 11 litres of usable volume, or about 22 to 30 cm wide. That takes a phone, a wallet, keys and sunglasses without becoming a bag you have to dig through.
- How do I know if a bag will fit my laptop?
- Compare the bag's internal width and height against the laptop's, and allow at least a centimetre on each dimension plus the depth of a sleeve. A 13 inch laptop needs roughly 33 by 24 cm of clear internal space.
- What size bag suits my height?
- A bag reads well at roughly an eighth to a sixth of your height. On a 168 cm frame that is about 21 to 28 cm wide; wider than about 34 cm and the bag starts to dominate rather than finish an outfit.
- Why does a bag hold less than its measurements suggest?
- Tapered sides, a narrower base, linings and internal pockets all take room, and soft bags do not hold their nominal shape. Expect about a fifth less usable volume than the three measurements imply.
