Field notes

Insuring a handbag: what to schedule it for, and what a claim will pay

A designer handbag carries the same three values as anything else valuable. Retail replacement value is what a comparable bag would cost to buy today, and it is the figure an insurer schedules. Fair market value is what a private buyer or a consignment sale would bring. A buy-outright offer is lower again. The first is the one to insure for, and it is usually well above the other two.

Home insurance rarely covers a bag properly out of the box. Most policies fold handbags into a general contents limit, cover them only inside the home, and exclude loss away from the property altogether — which is where handbags are actually lost.

What cover costs, and what it excludes

Scheduled cover for a designer handbag generally runs between half and one and a half percent of the insured value a year. A bag scheduled at $5,000 therefore costs roughly $25 to $75 annually, though minimum premiums often make small schedules uneconomic and a personal-effects rider covering several items usually prices better.

Read the exclusions before you rely on the cover. Wear and tear, scuffing, staining and gradual damage are excluded almost universally — insurance is for sudden loss, not for the corners rubbing. Mysterious disappearance is limited or excluded on many policies, and unattended loss in a public place is a common decline.

What an insurer will want from you

Before a bag can be scheduled, most carriers ask for some or all of:

  • The original store receipt, or a written valuation for anything bought second hand.
  • Photographs from several angles, including hardware, interior and date code or serial.
  • The model name, size, colour and material as the house describes them.
  • A third-party authentication for a bag bought on the secondary market.
  • A revaluation every few years, because retail prices on classics rise steadily.

Why the scheduled figure is above the resale figure

An insurance valuation answers a hypothetical: if this were stolen tomorrow, what would it cost to replace at retail, promptly, without hunting for a bargain? For a classic still in production, that is the current boutique price, which may be well above what you paid and well above what the bag would resell for.

The gap is normal and it is not a mistake. A bag scheduled at $6,000 that would consign for $2,800 is answering a different question, and both figures are honest.

Questions we are asked

Can you insure a designer handbag?
Yes — as a scheduled item on a homeowner's or renter's policy, on a personal-effects rider, or through a standalone valuables policy. Left unscheduled, most policies cover it only within a general contents limit and often only inside the home.
How much does it cost to insure a handbag?
Roughly half to one and a half percent of the insured value a year, so about $25 to $75 annually on a $5,000 bag. Minimum premiums mean a rider covering several items is usually better value than one small schedule.
What value should I insure a bag for?
Retail replacement value — what a comparable bag costs at the boutique today, not what you paid and not what it would resell for. For classics that have had price rises, that figure moves upward every year.
Does insurance cover wear and tear on a handbag?
No. Scuffed corners, worn handles, plating loss and staining are excluded as gradual damage on essentially every policy. Cover is for theft, loss and sudden accidental damage.
