The double flap
Lift the outer flap: a genuine Classic Flap has a second full flap beneath it, finished to the same standard, with the back pocket behind. Counterfeits frequently build a single flap and rely on nobody opening the bag.

The Classic Flap is the bag the whole counterfeit industry aims at, and it is also the bag with the most rules. It has a double flap — lift the outer flap and there is a second one beneath, with the pocket behind it — and that inner flap is finished to the same standard as the outer. A single-flap construction on a bag sold as a Classic Flap is either a different model or a fake.
The lock is the interlocking CC turn-lock; the Reissue 2.55 uses a rectangular Mademoiselle lock instead, and the two are not interchangeable between models. Behind the flap, the back of the bag carries an open pocket that Chanel has included since the original — its edges are finished, not raw.
Chain length distinguishes the sizes as much as the body does, and the leather woven through the chain runs the full length without a join. Where the chain enters the body it passes through metal-lined eyelets; the lining should be smooth and seated, not a rough hole punched through leather.
Leather choice moves the market as much as size does. Lambskin is softer, glossier and marks more easily; caviar is pebbled, hard-wearing and generally worth more at resale for exactly that reason.
Mini · Small · Medium / Medium Large · Jumbo · Maxi
Establish which of these you are holding before judging it. A genuine piece read against another reference's rules will look wrong when it is not.
These apply to this model and not to the rest of Chanel. Work them alongside the maker's general checks, not instead of them.

The chain passes through metal-lined eyelets set square and seated flush. A raw punched hole, or an eyelet that has already begun to pull at the leather, is a construction shortcut.
Chanel has raised Classic Flap retail prices repeatedly and steeply, which has pulled the secondary market up with it — well-kept caviar Medium and Jumbo flaps have at times resold at or above their original purchase price. Lambskin in worn condition sits far lower, because the leather cannot be restored convincingly.
An orientation for honest, unrestored condition — never an appraisal, and never a quotation.
