Sized to the furniture below it, which is how a hung room comes to feel settled.

Sized to the sofa, not the wall. Anything narrower than half the sofa reads as an afterthought.

Heights are to the centre of the work. On open wall that is the museum eye line of 57 inches; over furniture the furniture governs instead, and the gap above it decides the height. Subtract the drop from the top of the frame to the taut wire to find where the hook goes, and lower everything a few inches where people are usually seated.

Field notes

What size art for your wall, and how high to hang it

Two rules cover most of it. Art hung over furniture is sized to the furniture, not to the wall: aim for something between two-thirds and three-quarters of the width of the sofa, bed, mantel or console below it. And art is hung to a center line about 57 inches from the floor, which is the height museums use and the reason a professionally hung room feels settled.

This instrument converts between inches and centimeters, names the nearest standard canvas, and works out the recommended width and the exact height to put the hook.

How big should the art be?

Over an 84 inch sofa, a single piece wants to be roughly 50 to 63 inches wide. Over a queen bed, 36 to 45 inches; over a king, 45 to 57. Above a mantel, keep the frame inside the width of the shelf. On open wall with nothing under it, fill between a half and three-quarters of the available width.

Undersized art is the most common mistake in a room, and it is the hardest to unsee. If a single canvas at the right width is out of reach, hang two or three pieces as a group and treat the group as one work — its overall width, gaps included, is the figure that matters.

How high to hang it

Center the work at 57 to 60 inches from the floor and it will be right in almost every room. Convert that to a hook position by taking the center height, adding half the height of the work, then subtracting the distance from the top of the frame down to the taut hanging wire.

Above furniture the geometry changes: leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame. Any more and the picture floats free of the furniture; any less and it looks propped on it. In a dining room, a stairwell, or anywhere people are mostly seated, drop the center line a few inches.

Standard canvas sizes

Ready-stretched canvases come in a familiar set of sizes — 8 × 10, 11 × 14, 16 × 20, 18 × 24, 24 × 36, 30 × 40 and so on. If a painting measures very close to one of those, it was probably bought ready-made. An unusual size suggests a stretcher built for it, which is a small piece of evidence in the picture's favor.

Questions we are asked

What size art should go above a couch?
Between two-thirds and three-quarters of the sofa width. For a standard 84 inch sofa that is roughly 50 to 63 inches, whether as one piece or a group measured overall.
How high should you hang a picture?
Center it 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6 to 10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the frame instead.
How big should art be above a king bed?
About 45 to 57 inches wide, centered on the bed rather than the wall, since headboards are rarely centered in a room.
How do I convert painting dimensions from cm to inches?
Divide centimeters by 2.54. A 60 × 45 cm canvas is about 23.6 × 17.7 inches. The converter above does it both ways and names the nearest standard canvas.
What are standard canvas sizes?
In inches: 8 × 10, 9 × 12, 11 × 14, 12 × 16, 16 × 20, 18 × 24, 20 × 24, 24 × 30, 24 × 36, 30 × 40, 36 × 48 and up.
